About This Game About Runeous is a 2 part story. In this episode we introduce the characters and the main plot which will be concluded in part 2. Each installment is free to play and serve as a beginning for our studio's future products. This Episode contains roughly 20 minutes of game time. Story The story follows a small group of heroes in a world ravished by the wars of its past. Runestones possessing magical qualities are what fuel the industry, their secrets long ago lost. Humans research them to unlock their hidden potential. Overpopulation in cities built for far fewer inhabitants. Homes built atop homes with giant walkways connecting the various levels together. The world of Ceir'a faces a new threat. It is here that Leif, a young runic apprentice meets a Jacawi tribeswoman Eme. Together they must overcome the differences of their people and unite the factions to thwart the rising evil empire. Though not all is as it seems when the very fabric of nature begins to fall apart! Characters The story follows 4 main characters and various 'NPCs' who help the story along. I believe this may have been my first actual visual novel game. Nice story, nice music. The only weird thing was the story took place in the year 600 or something and there were trains & electricity. Part of it felt a little Final Fantasy-ish. Like if Final Fantasy 6 was in visual novel form. It took me roughly 45 minutes to 100% this game.. easy 100%, nice guide on steam for it :). Runeous: Part One seems like a pretty decent VN style game, and I look forward to seeing the second part of this story sometime in the future.. Short VN (only first part), some great background artwork and music. Medieval setting. 7/10. Even though it is free, going to have to vote thumbs down. I understand what the developers are trying to do - build up some momentum, leave the game on a cliff hanger and hopefully the player will buy Part II when it eventually comes out (.. if it ever comes out). However, rather than giving you half a book, you are just getting the prologue. The game takes around 20 minutes to beat, 5 minutes extra to test the extra paths; there are 3 decisions in the game, none of which appear to affect anything other than the 3-4 lines after the choice. The world seems interesting, but way too short/shallow to be invested in any of the characters.The game engine is lackluster, no option to get rid of animations, or to speed up text. There is an option to "skip" but no usual choice between "skip seen before" and "skip all."The background art is beautiful and one of the best I have seen in any VN. A lot of talent there! The character art however, I did not like - bland looking and the faces all look mushy. That is not to say that I can draw any better, because I certainly cannot, but just isn't my style.In conclusion, I hate to be giving bad reviews to free games because there was certainly a lot of effort here. However, it simply isn't substantial enough, even as an introduction to the world. For that reason my recommendation is to pass and check out some of the other free VNs that are more fleshed out.
